Cancer Campus® is a major project of national and international importance for the Greater Paris metropolis and was highlighted by the French President in his speech in April 2009. The campus is one of the main sites dedicated to the future of medicine and contributes to the attractiveness of Paris and surrounding region. As part of the proposed new "Greater Paris public transport network", a metro station will be built on the site to serve two lines: Line 14, which connects the centre of Paris to Orly and Villejuif, and the circle line (Orbival), serving southern Paris Region, from Val-de-Marne to Hauts de Seine.
According to the documentation prepared for the public debate on the metro station (www.debatpublic-network-grandparis.org): "the IGR station will provide direct links to the hub of La Défense and central Paris, as well as access to Orly and Roissy airports. [...] Cancer Campus® could become a major hub in the metropolitan region".
As a means of increasing their competitiveness, the major sites in Paris Region dedicated to medical innovation came together to form a regional group, extending from Paris and southern Paris to Evry, in what has become known as the "Paris Biotech Valley". T
hese sites include: Genopole®, Cancer Campus®, Institut du Cerveau et de la Moelle (Institute for Brain and Spinal Cord Disorders), Institut de la Vision (Vision Institute) and Biocitech. Each site has a clearly defined focus and features research and training facilities, a high-level care offer and innovative businesses. They are starting to engage in joint initiatives, information exchanges on projects and joint promotions at national and international level in conjunction with the Medicen competitiveness cluster, local authorities (City of Paris, Essonne and Val-de-Marne departments and Paris Region) and the Vallée scientifique de la Bièvre (Bièvre science valley).
This approach complements and is consistent with the major investment announced for the Plateau de Saclay. In his speech on 29 April 2009, the French President paid tribute to this goal by stating that the success and attractiveness of the Paris metropolitan area depended on the collective ability to showcase major development hubs, especially in life sciences.
