The town of Villejuif has been involved with Cancer Campus® since the project began, working alongside the Val-de-Marne General Council, the Institut Gustave Roussy and other partners. With its 30 INSERM and CNRS research facilities, three major hospitals (Institut Gustave Roussy, Hôpital Paul Brousse and Hôpital Paul Guiraud), and 7,000 physicians, researchers, caregivers and medical personnel, Villejuif has become known as a science and healthcare town. It also has two schools of engineering that partly specialise in computer science and robotics – two important disciplines in medical research. In addition, a stem cell platform is currently being set up within the Hôpital Paul Brousse complex as a result of a partnership between INSERM, the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris hospital network and Université Paris XI. Villejuif is the town where cancer research was invented. It was on the site of the future enterprise centre - land which belonged at the time to the Hôpital Paul Brousse – that in 1934 Professor Gustave Roussy founded France's first anti-cancer centre, one of the first such facilities in Europe to be linked to an experimental cancerology laboratory. The idea was to create a close-knit relationship between researchers and medical teams who would work together on a single site. Today Cancer Campus® represents a new milestone, as researchers and medical teams extend their relationship to the business community and the general public. Villejuif will soon be opening an enterprise centre/business hotel complex in the Barmonts development zone. It is the first building block of the Cancer Campus project and, starting in 2011, will accommodate biomedical companies as well as small and very small enterprises in the development stage.
