About us

Since 2006 Cancer Campus® has been developing a biocluster in Villejuif dedicated to the fight against cancer. Today, combating cancer calls for healthcare professionals, public and private sector researchers and high-level training to be located on a single site – and all ultimately focused on the patient.

The site at Villejuif has long been associated with cancer research. Drawing on the expertise of the Institut Gustave Roussy, its research teams and other Paris Region healthcare and research institutions, Cancer Campus® continues to develop the work it has undertaken for more than 80 years. It is a key stakeholder in Cancéropôle Île-de-France (the Paris Region cancer hub), and in the Medicen competitiveness cluster, which has identified cancer as one of its strategic priorities.

Objectives

The objective is firstly to develop a science/training hub, which is the critical foundation of medical innovation, and secondly to house businesses that work in collaboration with academic researchers on innovative therapies or diagnostic projects. Achieving this objective entails creating a "campus" that is easily accessible, provides an array of services and is connected to the town. It must be a place that offers new buildings dedicated to public and private sector research and training at the highest level.

The vector for developing the project: the Cancer Campus Association

Since February 2007, Cancer Campus® has been carried and developed by a non-profit association. Its members are:

  • local authorities, comprising the département of Val-de-Marne, the town of Villejuif, the Communauté d’Agglomération (district council) of Val de Bièvre;
  • the Institut Gustave Roussy, and Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris (the AP-HP hospital network);
  • the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry;
  • public sector finance institution Caisse des Dépôts is a project partner, as are Paris Region and the Genopole® and Medicen competitiveness clusters.

The association is co-financed by its members, the main ones being the Val-de-Marne General Council and the Institut Gustave Roussy.

Within a short space of time the Cancer Campus Association has forged a strong network of partnerships, underscoring the project’s strategic importance. It guarantees the effective delivery of the project, in line with the defining characteristics and good practices of a biocluster, and delegates to its partners the responsibility for the initiatives vital to the project’s success. Cancer Campus partners that are not members of the Association can enter into collaboration agreements.
